Nudi (software)

Nudi is a proprietary Indic script input method and font package developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing), an R&D organization under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India. It aims to facilitate text input and display in various Indian languages, including but not limited to Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Nudi typically includes a keyboard driver or input method editor (IME) that allows users to type in Indian languages using a standard QWERTY keyboard. The software utilizes a phonetic or transliteration-based approach, where users type the approximate sound of the word in Roman script, and Nudi converts it to the corresponding Indian script. This approach is often preferred by users who are familiar with the Roman script but not necessarily with the specific layout of a traditional Indic keyboard.

The Nudi package also often contains fonts designed to accurately render Indian scripts across different operating systems and applications. These fonts are crucial for ensuring that the text entered using the input method is displayed correctly and consistently.

While Nudi has historically been a popular choice for Indic language text input, especially on Windows-based systems, its prevalence has been somewhat impacted by the increasing availability and sophistication of alternative Indic input methods and font packages, including those built directly into modern operating systems and open-source solutions. The software remains, however, a relevant part of the landscape of Indic language computing.
