Rhodopan

Rhodopan is a trade name for a type of anti-D immunoglobulin (also sometimes referred to as Rho(D) Immune Globulin or RhoGAM). It is a medication used to prevent RhD alloimmunization in RhD-negative individuals exposed to RhD-positive red blood cells. This exposure can occur during pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, abortion, ectopic pregnancy, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, or trauma to the abdomen.

The mechanism of action of Rhodopan involves suppressing the RhD-negative individual's immune response to the RhD-positive red blood cells. By administering anti-D immunoglobulin, it prevents the formation of anti-D antibodies in the mother. These anti-D antibodies, if formed, can cross the placenta in subsequent pregnancies and attack RhD-positive fetal red blood cells, leading to hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN).

Rhodopan is typically administered via intramuscular injection. The dosage and timing of administration vary depending on the specific circumstances of exposure. It is crucial for RhD-negative women to receive appropriate antepartum and postpartum prophylaxis to prevent RhD alloimmunization and the subsequent risk of HDFN in future pregnancies.

Potential side effects of Rhodopan are generally mild and may include pain, tenderness, or redness at the injection site. More serious adverse reactions are rare but can include allergic reactions. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional for proper guidance on the use and administration of Rhodopan.
