Henry Newton (bishop)
Henry Newton (died 17th February 1929) was an Anglican bishop, serving as the Bishop of Carpentaria in the Church of England in Australia.
Newton was educated at St. Peter's College, Adelaide and Durham University, earning a Licentiate of Theology (LTh). He was ordained a deacon in 1897 and a priest in 1898.
His early career involved curacies in South Australia, followed by missionary work in New Guinea. He served as Warden of St Paul's Theological College, Moa Island and Archdeacon of Thursday Island.
Newton was consecrated Bishop of Carpentaria on 2nd February 1915, a position he held until his death in 1929. As Bishop, he was responsible for a vast and sparsely populated diocese covering northern Queensland, parts of the Northern Territory, and islands in the Torres Strait. His ministry focused particularly on the needs of Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders.
