William Bromley (engraver)

William Bromley (1769-1842) was a British engraver, primarily known for his portrait and historical subject engravings. He was born in Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, and trained under Benjamin Smith, a prominent engraver in London.

Bromley achieved considerable success during his career, producing plates after paintings by leading artists of the time, including Sir Thomas Lawrence, Sir William Beechey, and Henry Fuseli. His work appeared in prominent publications, and he was commissioned to create engravings for both private clients and publishers.

He is particularly noted for his portrait engravings, capturing the likenesses of prominent figures such as King George III, Queen Charlotte, and various members of the aristocracy and political elite. Bromley's style is characterized by meticulous detail and a sensitive rendering of facial features and textures. He employed a combination of techniques, including line engraving and stipple engraving, to achieve nuanced tonal effects.

Later in his life, Bromley held the position of historical engraver to Queen Victoria. He died in Chelsea in 1842. His sons, James Bromley (1800-1838) and William Bromley (1803-1870), also followed careers as engravers, continuing the family's artistic tradition.
