Charlie (elephant)

Charlie was a beloved Asian elephant who resided at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, Oregon, for over five decades. Arriving in 1964 at a young age, Charlie became a prominent and popular figure within the zoo community and among visitors. He was known for his gentle demeanor and interactions with his keepers, developing strong bonds with those who cared for him.

Charlie's presence contributed significantly to the zoo's elephant conservation efforts, raising awareness about the challenges facing Asian elephants in the wild, including habitat loss and poaching. The zoo's elephant program aimed to educate the public about these issues and support conservation initiatives in Asian elephant range countries.
