Koshkonong (community), Wisconsin

Koshkonong is an unincorporated community located primarily in the Town of Koshkonong, in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, United States. A small portion also extends into Dane County. It is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Koshkonong, a widening of the Rock River.

The community's name is derived from Lake Koshkonong, which itself is believed to be a Native American word meaning "place where the waters meet" or "great lake."

Historically, Koshkonong was an important area for Native American populations, particularly the Ho-Chunk Nation. White settlement began in the early to mid-19th century, drawn by the fertile lands and access to water transportation. Agriculture became the dominant industry, and the community developed around farming and related activities.

Today, Koshkonong is a primarily rural community. The lake remains a significant recreational resource, attracting visitors for fishing, boating, and other water sports. The area retains a strong connection to its agricultural heritage. Local businesses cater to both residents and tourists, and the community hosts events that celebrate its history and natural environment. The U.S. Census Bureau does not recognize Koshkonong as a separate Census Designated Place.
