Uplift (science fiction)

Uplift, in science fiction, most notably within the works of David Brin's Uplift Universe, refers to the process by which a more advanced species accelerates the evolution of a less advanced species to sapience. This is typically achieved through genetic engineering, advanced training, and cultural guidance, essentially "uplifting" them to a level of technological and societal sophistication previously beyond their natural capabilities.

The concept of Uplift raises complex ethical and philosophical questions, exploring the responsibilities, rights, and potential pitfalls involved in significantly altering the developmental trajectory of an entire species. In many fictional settings, the consequences of Uplift are not always positive, leading to social unrest, unforeseen ecological damage, or even the creation of a species dependent on its patron.

Uplift often plays a key role in the worldbuilding of science fiction universes, establishing a hierarchy of species and defining the relationships between them.
