Huraa (Kaafu Atoll)
Huraa is an inhabited island in the Kaafu Atoll of the Maldives. It is located in the North Malé Atoll, also known as Kaafu Atoll. The island is governed by an Island Council elected by the residents.
Geography: Huraa is a relatively small island with a typical tropical Maldivian landscape. It is characterized by sandy beaches, lush vegetation including palm trees and mangroves, and a surrounding lagoon.
Economy: The primary economic activities on Huraa include fishing, tourism, and local crafts. Guesthouse tourism has become increasingly significant in recent years, providing an alternative to resort-based tourism.
Culture: The islanders of Huraa adhere to Maldivian traditions and Islamic customs. They speak Dhivehi, the national language of the Maldives.
Infrastructure: Huraa has basic infrastructure including a school, a health center, and a mosque. It is accessible by speedboat from Malé.
Environmental Concerns: Like many low-lying islands in the Maldives, Huraa is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and coastal erosion. Solid waste management is also a challenge.
