Robert Williams (adjutant general)

Robert Williams (1773-1836) was an American lawyer, soldier, and politician who served as the Adjutant General of the Mississippi Territory from 1805 to 1817 and the Adjutant General of the United States Army from 1812 to 1815. Born in North Carolina, he studied law and practiced in the state before moving to the Mississippi Territory. As Adjutant General of the Territory, he played a significant role in organizing and administering the militia and other military forces.

In 1812, Williams was appointed Adjutant General of the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. In this role, he was responsible for the administrative and logistical functions of the army, including personnel management, record keeping, and the issuance of orders. After the war, he resigned his commission and returned to private life. He continued to be involved in political affairs and held various local offices until his death. His tenure as Adjutant General of the U.S. Army was marked by challenges related to the rapid expansion of the military during wartime.
