Aufheben (album)
Aufheben is the seventh studio album by the British electronic music band Underworld, released in 2012. The album's title derives from the German philosophical concept of Aufhebung, often translated into English as "sublation," "supersession," or "transcendence." Aufhebung simultaneously implies preserving, canceling, and rising above something.
The album marked a return to a more guitar-driven sound for Underworld, integrating elements of krautrock and post-punk into their signature electronic style. It was conceived after a period of improvisation and experimentation by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, documented on their website as "Riverrun."
Aufheben was generally well-received by critics, who praised its innovative soundscapes and exploration of themes such as urban alienation and social commentary. Several tracks from the album were released as singles, including "Scribble" and "Between Stars." The album was also notable for its extensive accompanying visual material, including music videos and live performances.
