Gary Bennett (baseball)
Gary Scott Bennett (born April 17, 1972) is an American former professional baseball catcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1995 to 2010 for the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros, Florida/Miami Marlins, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bennett was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1990 MLB draft and made his major league debut with them in 1995. Known primarily as a defensive catcher, he provided solid backstop capabilities for various teams throughout his career. He was generally regarded as a reliable receiver and game caller, with a respectable arm.
While not a significant offensive contributor, Bennett was valued for his experience and leadership behind the plate. He served as a backup catcher for much of his career, providing valuable support to starting catchers and mentoring younger players. His longest tenure with a single team was with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he played from 2002 to 2005. After retiring from professional baseball, Bennett has been involved in baseball instruction and coaching roles.
