HMS P222

HMS P222 was a British submarine of the third group of the U class, built by Vickers Armstrong, Barrow-in-Furness. She was launched on 17 November 1942 and commissioned on 8 January 1943.

During World War II, HMS P222 operated primarily in the Mediterranean, sinking numerous Axis vessels, including several Italian merchant ships, an Italian submarine (the Velella), and various smaller craft. She also carried out offensive patrols and landed special forces.

In December 1943, HMS P222 sailed from Malta on a patrol in the Tyrrhenian Sea. She was scheduled to return to base on 28 December, but never arrived. The exact circumstances of her loss are unknown, but it is believed she was likely sunk by a mine or depth charges from an Italian corvette. All hands were lost.
