Grenadine

Grenadine is a non-alcoholic syrup characterized by its rich, red color and tart-sweet flavor. It is a common ingredient in cocktails, mocktails, and other beverages, and is also sometimes used in cooking.

Traditionally, grenadine was made from pomegranate juice, sugar, and sometimes lemon juice. The name "grenadine" itself is derived from the French word for pomegranate, grenade.

However, commercially produced grenadine often contains little or no actual pomegranate juice. Instead, it frequently relies on artificial flavorings, corn syrup, and food coloring (typically red dye) to achieve the desired flavor and appearance. While some producers still make grenadine using traditional methods with pomegranate, it's important to check the ingredient list to determine the composition of a particular brand.

The flavor profile of grenadine is typically a blend of tartness and sweetness. Good quality grenadine, especially that made with real pomegranate, has a complex fruitiness. It is used in drinks to add sweetness, color, and a distinctive flavor.

Grenadine is a key ingredient in classic cocktails like the Tequila Sunrise, Shirley Temple, and Jack Rose.
