Howlite
Howlite is a borate mineral found in evaporite deposits. It was discovered in 1868 near Tick Canyon in Los Angeles County, California, and named after Henry How, a Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist who first described it.
Occurrence and Formation: Howlite typically forms as irregular nodules, sometimes resembling cauliflower, within sedimentary rocks containing boron compounds. It is often found in association with other borate minerals like colemanite and ulexite. The formation process involves the alteration of pre-existing borate deposits under specific geological conditions.
Physical Properties: Howlite is characterized by its porous, chalky white appearance, often featuring grey or black veining in a web-like pattern. It is a relatively soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 3.5. Its chemical formula is Ca₂B₅SiO₉(OH)₅. Howlite has a vitreous to subvitreous luster and a white streak. It is opaque and exhibits an uneven fracture.
Uses: Due to its porous nature and ability to readily accept dye, howlite is frequently used as an imitation of other, more expensive gemstones, such as turquoise, magnesite, and white marble. It is commonly dyed blue to resemble turquoise and sold as "turquenite" or "white turquoise." Howlite is also carved into ornamental objects, beads, and cabochons for jewelry. In its natural state, it is sometimes used for minimalist jewelry designs. It is also purported by some to have metaphysical properties.
