MagSafe (wireless charger)
MagSafe is a proprietary magnetically attached wireless power transfer and accessory system developed by Apple Inc. Originally introduced in 2006 as a magnetic power connector for MacBook laptops, it was discontinued in 2016 (except for the 2017 MacBook Air) in favor of USB-C charging. The name was revived in 2020 with a new MagSafe system for the iPhone 12 series and later iPhone models, as well as a separate MagSafe connector for MacBook Pro models released in 2021.
The 2020 iteration of MagSafe is based on the Qi wireless charging standard but incorporates a circular array of magnets around the wireless charging coil. These magnets allow for precise alignment between the iPhone and MagSafe chargers or accessories, facilitating faster wireless charging and secure attachment of accessories like wallets or cases.
The new MagSafe system for iPhones supports up to 15W of wireless charging, provided a compatible 20W or higher USB-C power adapter is used. Standard Qi charging remains supported on iPhones with MagSafe, but at a lower wattage (typically 7.5W).
The 2021 MagSafe connector reintroduced on MacBook Pro models is a departure from the USB-C based charging used in previous models. It features a magnetic connection similar to the original MagSafe, designed to detach easily if the power cord is pulled, preventing the laptop from being yanked off a surface. While the new MagSafe connector is primarily for charging, the included USB-C ports on the MacBook Pro also support power delivery.
