N (New York City Subway service)
The N is a lettered local service of the New York City Subway. It operates at all times. During weekdays, the N runs between Ditmars–Astoria in Astoria, Queens and Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn, via the Broadway Line in Manhattan. During late nights, the N runs between 96th Street–2nd Avenue in the Upper East Side, Manhattan and Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue, also via the Broadway Line.
The N provides local service along its entire route. When the N runs its full route, it serves a crucial transit corridor, connecting residential areas of Queens and Brooklyn with Manhattan's central business districts. The N is one of several services that use the BMT Broadway Line through Manhattan, contributing significantly to the line's high passenger volume. The service is known for its frequent stops and direct connection to popular tourist destinations in Brooklyn, such as Coney Island.
The N's route has varied over the years due to construction, service changes, and other operational needs. The current service pattern has been in place since service changes were last implemented. Like other lettered subway lines, the N's designation is based on historical routing and operational characteristics.
