Grenadier Island (Saint Lawrence River)
Grenadier Island is one of the larger islands in the Thousand Islands archipelago, located in the Saint Lawrence River, straddling the border between the United States and Canada. Specifically, it lies within the jurisdiction of the United States and is part of the Town of Clayton in Jefferson County, New York.
The island is primarily a summer resort community, with a significant number of seasonal residences. It is accessible primarily by private boat, and ferry service is available to and from the mainland.
Grenadier Island features a mix of natural landscapes, including woodlands, rocky shorelines, and smaller inland lakes and ponds. Recreational activities popular on the island include boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and birdwatching. The island's diverse ecosystem supports a variety of plant and animal life.
Historically, Grenadier Island has been inhabited by indigenous peoples and later settled by European immigrants. It played a role in maritime commerce along the Saint Lawrence River. While not heavily developed compared to some other islands in the Thousand Islands, Grenadier Island retains a distinct character associated with its natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
