Goli Suyi
Goli Suyi, also sometimes spelled "Goli Suya," is a popular street food dish originating from Nigeria, specifically the Hausa community in the northern part of the country. It consists of deep-fried yam (typically white yam, Dioscorea rotundata) that is coated in a dry, spicy rub similar to that used for Suya, a grilled meat skewer.
The yam is usually peeled, cut into batons or chunks, boiled until partially cooked, and then dipped in the Suya spice mixture before being deep-fried until golden brown and crispy.
The Suya spice rub is a complex blend of various ingredients, often including ground peanuts or peanut cake (kulikuli), ginger, garlic, onions, different chili peppers (such as cayenne pepper or Scotch bonnet), paprika, vegetable oil, and bouillon cubes. The exact composition varies by vendor, with each having their own secret recipe.
Goli Suyi is often served as a snack or a side dish. It is typically sold by street vendors throughout Nigeria and is often accompanied by a sprinkle of the Suya spice mixture and sliced onions. Due to the increasing Nigerian diaspora, it can also be found in some international locations with significant Nigerian communities.
