Basarabia (newspaper)
Basarabia was a Romanian-language newspaper published in Chișinău (then Kishinev), Bessarabia, primarily during two distinct periods: 1906-1907 and 1932-1933.
The first iteration of Basarabia, published in 1906-1907, held significant historical importance as one of the first newspapers to promote Romanian national identity and advocate for the rights of Romanians within the Bessarabian Governorate of the Russian Empire. It played a crucial role in the awakening of Romanian national consciousness in the region. This early Basarabia was founded by Nicolae Alexandri, and its contributors included prominent intellectuals and political figures who later became influential in the union of Bessarabia with Romania. Due to censorship and political repression by the Russian authorities, its publication was short-lived.
The second Basarabia newspaper was published between 1932 and 1933. This later version emerged during a period when Bessarabia was part of Greater Romania. While also advocating for Romanian interests and culture, it existed in a different political and social context. It provided news and commentary on local and national affairs, contributing to the public discourse of the time.
