French frigate Courageuse (1778)
The Courageuse was a 32-gun Charmante-class frigate of the French Royal Navy, launched in 1778. She was designed by Antoine Groignard and formed part of a series of ships intended to bolster French naval strength during the American Revolutionary War.
She saw action in several notable engagements. One significant event was her involvement in the Battle of Ushant in 1778, a largely indecisive fleet action between the French and British fleets. The Courageuse, under the command of a French captain, played a role in the broader maneuvers and exchanges of fire during this battle, though specific details of her individual contributions are scarce.
Later, in 1779, the Courageuse participated in the Franco-Spanish Armada's campaign in the English Channel, an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to invade Britain. She likely served as part of the fleet escort and supply line during this period.
In 1799, under the command of Lieutenant de vaisseau Trublet, she was captured by the British frigate HMS Nereide, commanded by Captain Watkins. This capture occurred off the Île de France (Mauritius) during the Quasi-War between the United States and France, although the Courageuse was not directly involved in that conflict. The British took her into service as HMS Courageuse.
As HMS Courageuse, the ship continued to serve in the Royal Navy. Details of her activities under British command are less readily available than her French service, but she likely participated in various patrols and convoy duties. She was eventually disposed of, the details and year of which require further verification from naval records. The Courageuse represents a typical example of a French frigate of the late 18th century, reflecting the shipbuilding technology and naval tactics of the era.
