Charles Band (businessman)

Charles Band (born December 27, 1951) is an American film producer and director, known primarily for his prolific output of low-budget, direct-to-video horror, science fiction, and fantasy films. He is the founder of several production and distribution companies, including Empire Pictures, Full Moon Features, and Wizard Video.

Band's career began in the 1970s with a series of independent films. He gained notoriety in the 1980s with Empire Pictures, which produced films such as Ghoulies, Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Troll. Empire Pictures was financially successful but ultimately collapsed due to debt.

Following the demise of Empire, Band founded Full Moon Features, which continues to produce and distribute low-budget genre films. Full Moon is best known for its puppet-based horror films such as the Puppet Master series, Demonic Toys, and Subspecies. The company has also produced several other series, including Trancers, Killjoy, and Gingerdead Man.

Band's work has been criticized for its low production values and often campy style, but he has cultivated a significant cult following. He is considered a pioneer in the direct-to-video market and a master of low-budget filmmaking. His films are often characterized by their practical effects, imaginative creature designs, and over-the-top storylines.

In addition to his work in film production, Band also founded Wizard Video, a video distribution company specializing in exploitation and horror films. Wizard Video was known for its controversial VHS covers and its release of uncut versions of classic horror films.
