Quail Island (Victoria)

Quail Island is a small island located in Western Port Bay, Victoria, Australia. It is situated approximately 6 kilometers south of Tooradin and is part of the Western Port Ramsar site, designated for its ecological significance as a wetland of international importance.

The island is primarily composed of mudflats and saltmarsh environments, providing crucial habitat for a variety of migratory wading birds, including species protected under international agreements such as the Japan-Australia Migratory Bird Agreement (JAMBA) and the China-Australia Migratory Bird Agreement (CAMBA).

Access to Quail Island is restricted to protect its fragile ecosystem and the birds that rely on it. Scientific research and conservation management activities are conducted periodically. Public access is generally prohibited, contributing to the undisturbed nature of the island's environment.

The island plays a significant role in the overall ecological health of Western Port, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna adapted to the saline conditions. Its relatively small size belies its importance as a critical habitat for migratory bird populations in the region.
