39th Division (Imperial Japanese Army)

The 39th Division (第39師団, Dai-sanjūkyū Shidan) was an infantry division in the Imperial Japanese Army. Its call sign was the Kikusui Division (菊水兵団, Kikusui Heidan).

The 39th Division was formed on February 8, 1942, in Hiroshima, as part of the 36th, 37th, 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st divisions, created as rapidly mobilized reinforcements following the successes in the initial stages of the Pacific War. The division was initially assigned to the Central District Army.

The 39th Division was assigned to the 20th Army in June 1942, and subsequently dispatched to Nanking, China. As part of the general reshuffling of troops in China after the beginning of Operation Ichi-Go, the 39th Division was reassigned to the 6th Army in April 1944.

After the surrender of Japan in August 1945, the 39th Division was demobilized.
