Goldcoast (Switzerland)
The Goldküste (German for Gold Coast) is a region along the northeastern shore of Lake Zurich in Switzerland. It extends roughly from Zollikon to Feldmeilen, encompassing several affluent municipalities.
The name "Goldküste" originates from the area's favorable sun exposure, particularly during the winter months, which bathes the region in significantly more sunlight than other areas around the lake. This greater sunlight historically benefited vineyards located on the slopes, contributing to the area's reputation for producing high-quality wine.
Over time, the name has become associated with the high property values, low tax rates, and high quality of life enjoyed by residents of the area. The Goldküste is known for its expensive villas, well-maintained gardens, and picturesque views across Lake Zurich towards the Alps.
Municipalities generally considered part of the Goldküste include:
- Zollikon
- Küsnacht
- Erlenbach
- Herrliberg
- Meilen
Other nearby municipalities such as Kilchberg, Rüschlikon and Horgen, while located on Lake Zurich, are typically not considered part of the Gold Coast due to their location on the opposite (western) shore or different socioeconomic profiles.
