Tribes 2
Tribes 2 is a multiplayer online first-person shooter video game, part of the Tribes series. Developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra On-Line, it was released in March 2001. The game is known for its large outdoor environments, jetpacks, skiing (using momentum to traverse the terrain), and team-based gameplay.
The core gameplay revolves around capture the flag (CTF), though other game modes such as arena, deathmatch, rabbit, and capture and hold are also available. Players choose from different armor classes, each with varying speed, armor, and weapon loadouts. A key element of gameplay involves mastering the use of the jetpack for aerial combat and rapid movement, as well as utilizing "skiing" to maintain high speeds while navigating the terrain.
Tribes 2 emphasizes teamwork and communication. Players can form teams and utilize integrated voice communication to coordinate strategies. Base defense, offensive pushes, and resource management are all crucial for success. The game allows for the construction and maintenance of base fortifications, including turrets, sensors, and generators.
Following Sierra's acquisition by Vivendi, support for Tribes 2 declined. The game's community, however, remained active and maintained the game through unofficial patches and modifications. These community efforts extended the lifespan of Tribes 2 and kept it playable for many years after its official support ended. Various community patches addressed bugs, improved performance, and even added new features to the game.
