Summoning (band)

Summoning is an Austrian atmospheric black metal band formed in 1993. The band consists of Richard Lederer (Protector) and Michael Gregor (Silenius). They are known for their distinctive sound, which combines black metal with epic and atmospheric elements, drawing heavily on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien for lyrical themes and overall atmosphere.

Summoning's music is characterized by heavily distorted guitars, keyboard-generated orchestral arrangements, and vocals that often consist of harsh whispers and rasps. The use of synthesized instruments and sampling is prominent, creating a layered and textured soundscape. Their songs frequently feature lengthy instrumental passages designed to evoke feelings of grandeur and fantasy.

Lyrically, Summoning's work focuses almost exclusively on Tolkien's Middle-earth, drawing inspiration from The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, and other related works. Themes of heroism, ancient lore, and the struggle between good and evil are prevalent. They have also occasionally explored themes from the works of Michael Moorcock.

Notable albums include Lugburz (1995), Dol Guldur (1996), Stronghold (1999), Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame (2001), Oath Bound (2006), Old Mornings Dawn (2013), and With Doom We Come (2018). The band is known for its meticulous and slow production process, with albums often taking several years to complete. Summoning rarely performs live.
