C/1900 O1 (Borrelly–Brooks)

C/1900 O1, also known as Comet Borrelly–Brooks, was a non-periodic comet discovered independently by Alphonse Borrelly and William Robert Brooks in July 1900. Borrelly found the comet on July 23, 1900, while Brooks observed it the following day, July 24, 1900. The designation "C/" indicates that it is a non-periodic comet, meaning it either has a very long orbital period or it may pass through the solar system only once. The year of discovery, 1900, and the letter "O" indicating the time of year of discovery (latter half of July) are part of the comet's designation. The number "1" signifies that it was the first comet discovered in that period of 1900. Due to its relatively high brightness at the time of discovery, it was observable with modest telescopes. Observations of the comet contributed to the understanding of cometary orbits and behavior, including its dust and gas emissions.
