Walton began his acting career on stage before transitioning to film. He also appeared in numerous B-movies and serials.

Though he never achieved leading man status, Walton was a reliable and versatile character actor known for his distinct voice and refined presence. His career slowed down in the late 1940s, and he made his final film appearance in 1951. He died in 1961 at the age of 51.
