Ana Néri
Ana Justina Ferreira Néri (December 13, 1814 – May 20, 1880) was a Brazilian nurse, considered the first nurse in Brazil.
During the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), Néri volunteered to serve as a nurse in military hospitals. Her dedication and compassion to the wounded soldiers led to her becoming a symbol of Brazilian nursing. Despite having no formal training in nursing, she learned practical skills on the job and managed hospitals in Corrientes, Humaitá, and Asunción.
After the war, Néri was recognized by the Brazilian government and received a lifetime pension for her service. She dedicated her later years to caring for orphans of the war.
Néri's legacy is significant in the development of Brazilian nursing. She is often honored as a pioneer and a role model for nurses throughout the country. Several hospitals, nursing schools, and awards bear her name.
