Grant Woods (attorney)

Grant Woods (1954 – 2021) was an American attorney and Republican politician from Arizona. He served as the 19th Attorney General of Arizona from 1991 to 1999.

Born in Mesa, Arizona, Woods received his bachelor's degree from Occidental College and his law degree from Arizona State University. He entered politics early, working on campaigns for U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater and then-Congressman John McCain. He was a close friend and advisor to McCain throughout his political career.

As Attorney General, Woods focused on consumer protection, environmental issues, and combating drug trafficking. He gained a reputation for being a moderate Republican and often clashed with more conservative members of his party.

After leaving office, Woods practiced law privately and became a commentator on Arizona politics. He became increasingly critical of the Republican Party, particularly its embrace of Donald Trump. In 2018, he endorsed Democrat Kyrsten Sinema for U.S. Senate. He publicly endorsed Joe Biden for President in 2020 and formally left the Republican Party, becoming an independent.

Woods was married to Marlene Galán Woods and had five children. He died unexpectedly in 2021 at the age of 67.
