Nan Joyce
Nan Joyce (1940 – 1999) was an Irish Traveller activist who campaigned for the rights of Travellers in Ireland. She was a prominent figure in the Irish Traveller movement and worked to raise awareness of the discrimination and prejudice faced by Travellers.
Joyce was a key advocate for improved housing, education, and healthcare for Travellers. She frequently spoke out against forced evictions and other forms of marginalization experienced by her community. She also played a significant role in challenging negative stereotypes and promoting a better understanding of Traveller culture.
In 1981, Nan Joyce ran for the Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament) in the Dublin West constituency, becoming the first Traveller woman to contest a general election in Ireland. While unsuccessful in her bid for election, her candidacy brought Traveller issues into the national political arena.
Throughout her life, Joyce actively participated in various Traveller advocacy groups and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Travellers. Her work continues to inspire efforts to achieve equality and justice for the Traveller community in Ireland.
