Emerald Lake (Mount Timpanogos Wilderness)

Emerald Lake is a small, alpine lake located within the Mount Timpanogos Wilderness area of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah County, Utah. It is situated in a cirque on the eastern slope of Mount Timpanogos, approximately one mile southeast of the summit. The lake is a popular destination for hikers, although reaching it requires a strenuous climb.

Location and Access:

Emerald Lake is accessed primarily via the Timpooneke Trail and the Aspen Grove Trail, both of which ascend Mount Timpanogos. The Timpooneke Trail is generally considered the less steep route, but both trails are long and challenging. From either trail, a spur path leads to the lake itself. Due to its high elevation and exposure, access to the lake is typically limited to the summer and early fall months when the trails are free of snow and ice.

Physical Characteristics:

The lake is relatively small in size and is fed primarily by snowmelt and springs. Its waters are known for their distinctive emerald-green hue, owing to the presence of glacial flour (fine particles of rock) suspended in the water. The lake's depth varies depending on the season and snowpack levels.

Recreation:

Emerald Lake serves as a scenic resting point for hikers attempting to summit Mount Timpanogos or simply enjoying the wilderness area. Swimming is generally discouraged due to the cold water temperatures and fragile alpine environment. Fishing opportunities are limited.

Environmental Considerations:

The Mount Timpanogos Wilderness is a protected area, and visitors are expected to practice Leave No Trace principles to minimize their impact on the environment. These principles include packing out all trash, staying on established trails, avoiding disturbing vegetation, and respecting wildlife. Due to its fragile alpine ecosystem, the area around Emerald Lake is particularly sensitive to disturbance.
