ESTCube-1

ESTCube-1 was Estonia's first satellite. It was a student satellite project launched as part of the European Space Agency's (ESA) educational program. Its primary mission was to test an electric solar wind sail (E-sail) concept in low Earth orbit.

Mission Objectives:

The main objective of ESTCube-1 was to deploy and test a thin wire tether, utilizing electrostatic forces from the solar wind for propulsion. This experiment aimed to provide proof-of-concept for the E-sail technology, which could potentially revolutionize deep-space exploration. Secondary objectives included capturing Earth imagery and communicating with ground stations.

Technical Specifications:

ESTCube-1 was a single-unit CubeSat, measuring 10x10x10 cm and weighing approximately 1 kg. It incorporated a radio transceiver for communication, solar panels for power generation, a camera for imaging, and an onboard computer for control. The E-sail experiment involved deploying a thin tether from the satellite.

Launch and Operations:

The satellite was launched on May 7, 2013, aboard a Vega rocket from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana. It operated in low Earth orbit (LEO) for approximately two years.

Significance:

ESTCube-1 marked a significant achievement for Estonian space technology and education. It provided valuable experience for students and researchers in satellite design, development, and operation.
