Danzig (horse)

Danzig (1977 – 2006) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and influential sire. Bred by Henryk de Kwiatkowski, he was foaled at his owner's farm in Chesapeake City, Maryland.

Danzig was known for his exceptional speed and early precocity. Trained by Woody Stephens, he won all three of his career starts as a two-year-old in 1979. These included a maiden special weight race at Belmont Park, an allowance race at Saratoga, and the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2).

Unfortunately, Danzig sustained a hairline fracture in his shin during training and never raced as a three-year-old. He was subsequently retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky.

Despite his brief racing career, Danzig proved to be a highly successful sire. He consistently ranked among the leading sires in North America and Europe. He was known for imparting his speed and stamina to his progeny. Among his notable offspring were Chief's Crown, Dayjur, War Chant, Langfuhr, Polish Precedent, and Agnes World.

Danzig became a leading sire of sires as well. His sons and grandsons have continued his influence on the breed, extending his legacy through numerous generations. He is considered one of the most important sires of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, significantly impacting the genetics of modern Thoroughbred racing.

Danzig died in 2006 at the age of 29 due to the infirmities of old age. He is buried at Claiborne Farm.
