Dacorum

Dacorum is a local government district in Hertfordshire, England. It covers an area of approximately 212 square kilometers (82 square miles) and is located in the west of the county. The district was formed on April 1, 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, through the merger of the borough of Hemel Hempstead, the urban district of Berkhamsted, the rural district of Berkhamsted, and the rural district of Tring.

The administrative headquarters of Dacorum Borough Council are located in Hemel Hempstead. Other significant towns and villages within the district include Berkhamsted, Tring, Markyate, Bovingdon, Kings Langley, and Leverstock Green.

Dacorum is characterized by a mix of urban and rural environments. Hemel Hempstead, the largest town, is a post-war new town, while the other towns and villages retain more of their historical character. The area is predominantly within the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, contributing to its attractive landscape.

The local economy is diverse, with key sectors including retail, manufacturing, and services. Due to its proximity to London, Dacorum also serves as a commuter area for many residents. Transport links include the A41, the M1 motorway, and railway lines providing connections to London Euston.

The borough council is responsible for a range of local services, including housing, planning, waste collection, and leisure facilities. The political composition of the council varies over time, reflecting the changing political landscape.
