StorySLAM
A StorySLAM is a live storytelling competition where individuals share personal, true stories on a stage in front of an audience and are judged by randomly selected members of that audience. The core tenets involve telling a story within a specific time limit, usually 5-7 minutes, without notes, props, or costumes.
StorySLAMs are typically organized around a central theme, such as "firsts," "risky business," or "lost and found." Storytellers interpret the theme and craft a narrative that fits within its parameters.
Format:
- Theme: Each StorySLAM event revolves around a specific theme, providing a common thread for the diverse stories.
- Sign-up: Potential storytellers sign up prior to the event, often on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Storytelling: Storytellers are called to the stage to share their story.
- Time Limit: Strict time limits are enforced, usually signaled by a buzzer or light when time is up. Going over the time limit results in point deductions.
- Judging: A panel of judges, randomly selected from the audience, evaluates the stories based on pre-determined criteria, often including content, performance, and adherence to the theme and time limit.
- Scoring: Judges assign scores to each storyteller. Scores are tallied, and the storyteller with the highest score wins.
- Prizes/Advancement: Winners may receive a prize or the opportunity to compete in a subsequent, higher-level StorySLAM event, such as a GrandSLAM.
Purpose and Significance:
StorySLAMs provide a platform for amateur and professional storytellers to share their experiences, connect with audiences, and hone their storytelling skills. They foster a sense of community and provide entertainment through the art of oral storytelling. They also encourage vulnerability and empathy by allowing individuals to share personal narratives and connect with others on an emotional level.
Origins:
While variations of storytelling competitions have existed for some time, The Moth is widely credited with popularizing the StorySLAM format. Founded in 1997, The Moth hosts StorySLAMs in numerous cities and has influenced the development of similar events worldwide.
