Cuilcagh

Cuilcagh (also known as Cuilcagh Mountain Park or the Cuilcagh Boardwalk) is a mountain located in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and County Cavan, Republic of Ireland. Its summit, at 665 metres (2,182 ft), is the highest point in County Cavan and one of the highest in County Fermanagh. It is predominantly composed of sandstone and shale.

The mountain is renowned for its distinctive appearance, often described as resembling a stepped pyramid or a flat-topped plateau. Its unique geology and rich biodiversity have led to its designation as a Special Area of Conservation.

Cuilcagh is a popular destination for hikers and walkers. The "Stairway to Heaven," a boardwalk section of the Cuilcagh Mountain Park trail, is a major attraction, drawing significant numbers of visitors each year. This boardwalk was constructed to protect the fragile peatland environment from erosion caused by increased foot traffic. The trail leading to the summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Cavan Burren, Lough Atona, and the wider countryside.

The area surrounding Cuilcagh is characterized by blanket bog, heath, and upland grasslands. The mountain supports a variety of plant and animal life, including protected species. Conservation efforts are ongoing to preserve the natural heritage of the area.
