Krypton (TV series)

Krypton is an American science fiction television series developed by David S. Goyer and Ian Goldberg for Syfy. Set approximately 200 years before the destruction of Superman's home planet, Krypton, the series follows Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), Superman's grandfather, as he fights to redeem his family's honor and prevent the planet's destruction.

Overview

The series explores Kryptonian society and culture, showcasing its strict caste system, religious beliefs, and advanced technology. The House of El, once a respected scientific guild, has been stripped of its rank and cast out due to Seg-El's grandfather, Val-El, being branded a heretic. Seg faces prejudice and hardship as he navigates a society on the brink of collapse, grappling with political intrigue, religious fanaticism, and the looming threat of Brainiac.

Plot

Seg-El encounters Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos), a time traveler from Earth who warns him of a future where Krypton is destroyed and Superman never exists. Brainiac, a sentient alien collector of worlds, is targeting Krypton. Seg must decide whether to trust Adam Strange and work to save his planet, even if it means altering the predetermined future and potentially changing Superman's destiny. He assembles a team of unlikely allies, including Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell), his love interest and a skilled soldier from the military guild, and Nyssa-Vex (Wallis Day), a cunning political player from a powerful ruling family.

Production

Krypton was filmed primarily in Canada. The series was developed by David S. Goyer, who also serves as an executive producer. The first season premiered on Syfy in March 2018, and the second season premiered in June 2019.

Cancellation

Syfy cancelled Krypton after two seasons in August 2019. A potential spin-off series, Lobo, was also scrapped.
