Bitter Sweet (1933 film)
Bitter Sweet is a 1933 American pre-Code musical film directed by Herbert Wilcox. It is an adaptation of the 1929 operetta Bitter Sweet by Noël Coward.
The film stars Anna Neagle as Sarah Millick, a young Englishwoman who elopes to Vienna with her music teacher, Carl Linden, played by Fernand Gravey (billed as Henri Garat). The plot revolves around their romantic relationship and experiences in Vienna, ultimately leading to tragedy. Sarah embraces a bohemian lifestyle and finds work as a singer. The film portrays their struggles and triumphs amid political unrest and social upheaval.
The 1933 film adaptation differs in some respects from the stage version. It features musical numbers composed by Noël Coward, including "I'll See You Again," one of Coward's most famous songs. The film was produced by British and Dominion Film Corporation.
The film is notable for its romantic themes, musical score, and depiction of pre-war Vienna. It was followed by a Technicolor remake in 1940 starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.
