Three Men in a Boat (1920 film)

Three Men in a Boat is a British silent comedy film adaptation of Jerome K. Jerome's popular 1889 novel Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog). Directed by Harry Pélissier, the film starred Pélissier himself alongside Lionelle Howard and Ernest Thesiger as the titular three men – Jerome, George, and Harris, respectively.

The film follows the basic plot of the novel, depicting the comic misadventures of the three friends as they take a rowing trip along the River Thames, accompanied by Montmorency, the dog. It chronicles their attempts at cooking, camping, and navigating the river, encountering various humorous situations and mishaps along the way.

Unlike many lost silent films, Three Men in a Boat is not completely lost. A partial print, consisting of approximately 30 minutes of footage, survives. This fragment offers a glimpse into the early cinematic interpretations of Jerome K. Jerome's work and the comedic acting styles of the period. However, significant portions of the film are still considered missing. The available footage has been screened at film festivals and archives, providing audiences with a taste of this early adaptation.
