Jiji line

The Jiji line (集集線, Jíjí xiàn) is a railway branch line in Taiwan operated by the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA). It branches off the West Coast line at Ershui station and runs east to Checheng station, passing through the town of Jiji, Nantou County. The line is notable for its scenic route through rural landscapes and historical railway stations, making it a popular tourist destination. It was originally built during the Japanese colonial period to facilitate the construction of the Sun Moon Lake hydroelectric power plant. The line has been preserved and upgraded to accommodate modern tourism, offering views of agricultural areas, mountains, and small towns. The Jiji line also provides access to hiking trails and other recreational activities in the region. Passenger service is typically provided by local trains utilizing diesel multiple units (DMUs). After the 921 earthquake in 1999 caused significant damage to the line, it was rebuilt and reopened, further solidifying its importance as both a local transport link and a tourist attraction.
