Northern Command (Australia)
Northern Command (NORCOM) was a former command within the Australian Army, responsible for the defence of Northern Australia. It encompassed the Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
NORCOM's role primarily focused on surveillance, reconnaissance, and response to security threats within its vast area of responsibility. Its responsibilities included border protection, support to civilian authorities during natural disasters or civil emergencies, and maintaining situational awareness across the north.
The Command was structured to be highly mobile and adaptable, given the unique challenges posed by the sparsely populated and geographically diverse terrain. Key elements included reconnaissance units, infantry battalions, and logistical support elements. NORCOM worked closely with other Australian Defence Force elements, including the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal Australian Navy, as well as with other government agencies such as the Australian Border Force.
Northern Command's headquarters were located in Darwin, Northern Territory.
In 2023, Northern Command was restructured and its functions were integrated into other Australian Defence Force commands and units. This reorganization aimed to streamline command structures and improve the overall efficiency of defence operations in Northern Australia. The former area of responsibility is now managed by other elements within the ADF.
