Nightfall (1988 film)
Nightfall is a 1988 science fiction film directed by Joe Giannone and based on Isaac Asimov's 1941 short story of the same name. The film stars David Carradine, Sarah Douglas, Alexis Smith, and James Earl Jones.
The story is set on a planet called Lagash, which is illuminated by six suns. The inhabitants of Lagash are unaware of the existence of a single, massive celestial body, which will cause a total eclipse, plunging the planet into darkness for the first time in millennia. This impending darkness triggers widespread panic and societal breakdown, as it fulfills an ancient prophecy of chaos and destruction.
The film adaptation deviates significantly from Asimov's original short story, adding elements such as religious cults, mutants, and a more action-oriented plot. While the short story focuses on the psychological and sociological impact of the impending darkness on a small group of scientists and intellectuals, the film expands the scope to depict a wider societal collapse.
Nightfall (1988 film) was critically panned upon its release, often criticized for its low budget, poor special effects, and significant departures from the source material. It is generally considered a poorly received adaptation of Asimov's classic story. Despite its negative reception, the film has gained a cult following among fans of low-budget science fiction.
