Radnorshire (UK Parliament constituency)

Radnorshire was a county constituency in Wales which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It existed from 1542 until 1918.

History

The constituency was created with the Laws in Wales Act 1542, which extended English parliamentary representation to Wales. Radnorshire elected one MP using the first past the post system. It comprised the historic county of Radnorshire.

Throughout its existence, Radnorshire was known as a relatively safe seat for the Conservative Party, although there were periods when the Liberal Party, and later the Liberal Unionists, held the seat.

Abolition

The constituency was abolished under the Representation of the People Act 1918, which significantly redrew constituency boundaries across the UK. Radnorshire was merged with Breconshire to form the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency.

Boundaries

The constituency covered the entire administrative county of Radnorshire.
