Qalangeh
Qalangeh (also spelled Qalengeh, Kalangeh) refers to a traditional form of Iranian folk music primarily associated with the Kurdish regions of Iran, particularly in the Kermanshah province. It is characterized by its somber and often melancholic melodies, typically performed on instruments such as the tanbur (a long-necked lute), the daf (a frame drum), and sometimes the sorna (a double-reed wind instrument).
Qalangeh music is often performed during mourning rituals, religious ceremonies, and storytelling events. Its themes often revolve around love, loss, nature, and religious devotion. The vocal component of Qalangeh is often characterized by its raw and emotive delivery, conveying a sense of deep feeling and spiritual longing.
While traditionally an oral tradition, efforts have been made to document and preserve Qalangeh music through recordings and written transcriptions. It remains a significant part of Kurdish cultural heritage and continues to be performed and appreciated in both traditional and contemporary settings.
