Surrender (Elvis Presley song)
"Surrender" is a song recorded by Elvis Presley and released as a single on February 7, 1961. It is based on the 1902 Neapolitan song "Torna a Surriento" (Come Back to Sorrento), the melody of which was adapted by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman for Presley's version. The lyrics of "Surrender," however, bear no resemblance to the original Italian song’s lyrics about longing for Sorrento.
"Surrender" is a dramatic ballad characterized by its operatic arrangement and Elvis's powerful vocal performance. The lyrics depict a lover urging their partner to surrender completely to their love, using metaphorical language of conquest and submission.
The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States for two weeks, becoming one of Presley's biggest hits. It also reached number one in the United Kingdom, as well as several other countries. The song has since become a staple of Elvis Presley's repertoire and a frequently performed tune by tribute artists. It is considered one of his signature ballads, demonstrating his vocal range and dramatic flair. The song has been included on numerous Elvis Presley compilation albums.
