Consort Guo (Yizong)

Consort Guo (郭氏), posthumously honored as Empress Gongmu (恭穆皇后), was a consort of Emperor Yizong of Tang. Details about her early life and family are scarce. She likely entered the palace during Emperor Yizong’s reign and rose to the rank of Consort, a high-ranking title for imperial concubines.

Her significance primarily stems from being the biological mother of Emperor Xizong of Tang, Yizong's successor. Because Xizong was relatively young when he ascended the throne, the role and influence of Consort Guo, now the Emperor's mother, potentially increased. However, historical records concerning her political involvement or personal life after Xizong's enthronement are limited.

Following her death, she was posthumously granted the title of Empress Gongmu, a common practice for the mothers of emperors even if they were only consorts during their lifetimes. This elevation was a sign of respect and legitimacy bestowed upon her and, by extension, her son, the reigning Emperor Xizong. Her posthumous title suggests a degree of reverence from her son and the court, although specific details of her personality and influence remain obscure due to the limitations of surviving historical documents.
