Cochrane (provincial electoral district)
Cochrane was a provincial electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that existed at various times between 1919 and 1999. The riding was located in Northern Ontario, encompassing areas of the Cochrane District. Its boundaries shifted over the years to reflect population changes and redistricting.
The riding's political history saw representation from various parties, including the Progressive Conservative, Liberal, and New Democratic parties, reflecting the diverse political leanings of Northern Ontario. The local economy in the region varied depending on the specific areas included within the riding's boundaries at different times, but often centered on natural resource industries such as forestry, mining, and tourism.
The electoral district's existence was interrupted several times through redistributions and boundary revisions. It has been replaced by different ridings throughout the course of history, its areas allocated into different electoral districts designed to more effectively represent the populations of Northern Ontario. For example, electoral redistributions consolidated and/or altered boundaries into newly formed riding names over time. Studying the riding of Cochrane gives insight into the political landscape of Northern Ontario and the evolution of representation in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.
