Chopta
Chopta is a small village and a region of meadows and evergreen forest in Uttarakhand, India. It is a popular base camp for trekking to Tungnath, the third temple of Panch Kedar, which lies 3.5 kilometers uphill. Chopta is situated at an altitude of 2,680 meters (8,790 ft) above sea level.
The region offers panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain range, including peaks like Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Chaukhamba. It is known for its natural beauty, including rhododendron forests, diverse birdlife, and opportunities for camping and trekking.
Chopta serves as a starting point for various treks, including the Tungnath trek, the Chandrashila trek (which extends from Tungnath), and shorter nature walks in the surrounding areas. The best time to visit Chopta is generally from March to May and September to November, avoiding the monsoon season. During winter (November to March), Chopta experiences heavy snowfall and the Tungnath temple is closed. Accommodation options in Chopta are primarily guesthouses, camps, and small hotels. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, and the nearest railway station is Rishikesh.
