William Maltby

William Maltby (1807-1854) was an English mathematician and headmaster. He is primarily known for his work on annuities and life contingencies.

Maltby served as the headmaster of Durham School from 1831 until his death. During his tenure, he focused on improving the school's academic standards and broadening its curriculum. He published several mathematical textbooks, including "Annuities and Reversions" (1833), which became a standard work on the subject in England for several decades. This book detailed the principles of calculating the present value of annuities and reversions, essential for insurance companies and financial institutions dealing with long-term financial obligations.

Maltby was a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, indicating his interest and contributions beyond purely educational matters. He was recognized within the scientific community for his mathematical expertise.
